Eclipse compilation failure in Geobuf.java after protobuf 3 upgrade

Description

After upgrade to protobuf-java 3.5.0, Geobuf.java does not compile in Eclipse Oxygen.1 (4.7.1). There are five compilation failures, all on return lines like this one at line 955:
